Above snakes is an open-world survival craft game where the infected citizens haunt the varied land types. The game carries a wild Weston inspired story line, where a green meteor like rock has fallen on Corpse Creek which destroys the village and those killed by it, come back alive. Its up to you (Aiyana, who you play) to survive this and find the truth about her missing Mother.
The story is told by a short video at the beginning of the game which is more then enough, and through out the game you meet many characters that guild you on your way, because this game is an open world survival, you are not tied to the story line and you can go off and build a mansion of a shelter if you wish. Saying this you do have to do some of the story line to unlock certain land types to gather needed material, but no two games will ever be the same with the ability to place land tiles where you want ( along as they match up)
The undead are also avoidable to a degree if you wish to stick to a crafty outdoorsy build simulation, this can be done by just avoiding them, you may encounter a few but its not an impossible task to defeat them or just walk by, which is also nice as it makes the game cosy and chill. At the same time you could go full on zombie survival on this game and seek them out. Each world piece is made avalible to place after building up your scouting progress, this is done by gathering berries and other recourses. Each world piece is has a unique land, such as forests, lakes, plains ext. which hole unique resources only found in those world pieces.

I found above snakes while looking at another square glade games game, i didnt feel like it was going to be a game that i would enjoy from the trailer as I'm not keen on story driven open world games, i like to just build and do my own thing, but i was pleasantly surprised with this game, it just fits so well and is so easy to just get on and play. There is no dead line to the tasks, i can just play story as and when needed or wanted and then carry on with my own building and crafting in game. I was happy that the undead where not unbeatable or needed a certain weapon to kill, its not a too realistic game which i love, its a nice chill game, which has a story but also has this openness of play and building.
Saying how much i enjoy the game, there are aspects of the game that let it down a tad, I'm not a gamer that gets out my microscope on every detail but when reviewing i do get close to the screen and pick the game apart, I mean its my job to. so lets talk about the bits that are not so great or make me question.
The first thing i noticed when starting the game was the dead-undead at the beginning of the game and throughout the game their model stays the same. An undead in jeans and a t-shirt.... but this is set in a Weston village where all the live characters are in Weston like clothing. This makes the undead seem very alien to the game.
This also leads me on to the overall design of characters and undead, they are very block like, i know some dislike this and i guess it depends on what games everyone plays, I like this as it dosent make it too realistic and adds to the chill game I belive it is meant to be.

The Tutorial is also seems abit pointless to the story line, I understand its there to get me use to controls and what i need to do but i just feel it needs to be reworked somehow. The tutorial starts just after the meteor hits and features you building a house for your neighbour Jo-ann, after you have build an amazing house for her, she then just leaves. You are then told to destroy your house, which was not effected by the meteor and now live in this cabin you built for the ungrateful lady.
I think that above snakes is an amazing game, that shows that you dont need all the bells and whistles in a game, things dont have to be 4k ultra realistic to be fun. I game to escape this high tec world we live in, and above snakes gives me that peace and escape. The unique world piece tiles make this game so unique making every single game played completely diffrent. The game also has a photo option so you can capture how you created your world and share it to other people.

If you want a simulation, craft, open world game then this game is for you and you will enjoy it so much.
If however you are looking for a hard core survival, zombie killing game this is not for you.
This is not sons of the forests or 7 days to die, this is Stardew valley with a little sprinkle of enemies.
